Clear, delete or mute a chat
Remove a chat's messages from your view, delete chats from your list, handle several at once and mute notifications. Other participants are not affected.

None beyond the role
Clearing and deleting only change your own view. The other people in the chat keep their messages.
Clear a chat
Point at the chat in your list (on a phone, press and hold it), open the Chat menu and choose Clear. Confirm Clear chat.
The messages are removed from your view. The chat stays in your list.
Delete a chat
Open the Chat menu and choose Delete, then confirm Delete chat?.
The chat and its messages are removed from your list. If the person messages you again, a new conversation starts.
Several chats at once
- Open the Chat menu on one chat and choose Select.
- Tick the other chats. The top shows how many are selected.
- Choose Clear or Delete and confirm.
Customer chats
WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook chats also offer Archive in the Chat menu, and Unarchive to bring them back. See Answer WhatsApp customers.
Mute a chat
Open the chat, open its menu and choose Mute notifications: Mute for 1 hour, Mute for 8 hours or Mute until I turn it back on. Choose Unmute notifications to hear it again. See Send, reply to and edit messages.
To delete one message for everyone, use the message menu. See Send, reply to and edit messages.
